After a contact subdued with Scope TKL include Asus with the new Asus ROG Strix Scope RX, keyboard gamer more conventional in its layout, but hiding, you will see, very well her game. As is often the case with Asus, the unboxing experience is not the most exciting. The box presents the different characteristics of the keyboard with always the use of black and red tones dear to the brand. Inside, we will find the keyboard, protected in a small fabric pocket as well as the various technical documentation.

Design & Ergonomics

Design-wise, Asus seems to have taken the basics of its previous models with a beveled metal plate that sits on a thick, hard plastic chassis. Despite this, we appreciate here the overall simplification of the design which says goodbye to the double texture of the metal plate which leaves room here for sobriety.

Indeed, we benefit here from a discreet gray plate and master key on which the switches rest. The whole is, therefore, simpler and more discreet than the previous models and this is not to displease us. The ROG logo sits in a plastic area where we will also find the indicator LEDs. A very discreet “Republic Of Gamer” inscription is also present at the base of the keyboard.

ROG RX switches, therefore, rest directly on the chassis and are topped with the most classic ABS keys. Asus still uses its very gamer typeface, whose readability and design are not the most convincing. The switches have a fairly correct and clearly visible unitary RGB lighting. All characters are well illuminated whether on the top or side of the keys.

On the other hand, the body of the switches is translucent and allows the red mechanism present inside to appear very clearly. A feature that will necessarily give a red tint to the lighting you choose in the pilot. It’s a detail and a matter of taste, but it’s visible enough that we point it out.

Underneath the keyboard is a pretty nice textured plastic chassis that displays the embossed ROG logo. The non-slip pads have undergone a slight slimming cure, but they in no way affect the experience since the keyboard and its kilo do not move at all once in place on the desk.

Note also the presence of two retractable feet to raise the back of the keyboard for more comfort. Unfortunately, the keyboard does not come with a wrist rest, which may disturb some of them due to the significant height of the keys.

On the connection side, it will be necessary to do with the imposing non-braided and non-removable USB cable of about 1.8 meters. This is equipped with a double USB A connector since the keyboard has a USB 2.0 port on the back which will allow you to connect a mouse or a USB key.

The Asus ROG Strix Scope RX keyboard, therefore, goes straight to the point by offering a fairly simple design without forgetting the origins of the Scope range. We appreciate here the solid construction of the whole which should therefore last over time without any problem.

Features

As with the rest of the Asus range, you will need to install the Armory Crate software to customize all aspects of the keyboard. The tool is not the most practical on the market to use, but it fulfills its role perfectly by offering a complete interface.

The first tab will, for example, make it possible to configure the function of each of the keyboard keys and we can assign keyboard keys or even multimedia shortcuts and other functions related to the operating system. It is also possible to record macros and assign them to the keys.

Different lighting effects are also available with certain animations, the color or speed of which can be personalized. To finely customize the lighting effects, you will need to go through a second application called Aura Creator. Likewise, the lighting can be synchronized between all compatible devices connected to your machine.

Of course, all these settings can be saved in profiles to associate with your games or applications so that they are applied automatically depending on the situation. These profiles can also be synchronized with the internal memory of the keyboard so as not to be dependent on the software.

If Armory Crate remains the most practical solution for customizing the keyboard, it has many built-in shortcuts. It is indeed possible to customize the lighting and even record macros on the fly.

In addition, various additional functions are present with multimedia shortcuts present on the keys F5 to F11. This is also the default operation of the keyboard and if you really want to use the F5 to F11 keys you will have to use the Fn key which can be locked depending on the situation.

In the same way, and always via the Fn key, it is possible to change the keyboard profile using the keys 1 to 6. An interesting function that allows to easily switch between the configurations, without having to go through the pilot. Finally, let’s not forget the presence of the panic button which allows to reduce all the windows and to mute the sound of the PC.

Performances

If in terms of design and functionality, the ROG Strix Scope RX is ultimately rather classic, it is in terms of its performance that it stands out from its competitors. Indeed, Asus has developed brand new optical switches which are very convincing.

On the technical sheet, here we take advantage of linear switches with an activation force of 45 grams and therefore rather “Red” type. The activation point is positioned at 1.5mm, which makes them more responsive than Cherry MX Reds. In addition, the initial force required is 40 grams, which makes them more resistant at the start of the race and therefore avoids involuntary activations.

On top of that, the very design of these switches differs from their competition. Exit the cross rod which is replaced here by a square, stabilized via a scissor system. In fact, no matter where we place our finger on the key, its descent is uniform and it remains very stable, compared to what we are used to finding on the market. We invite you to consult our video dedicated to the keyboard to realize the difference compared to other gaming keyboards.

In practice, these RX switches work wonders. We benefit from a really new experience with reactive switches offering a perfectly dosed resistance and a very rapid return to the initial position. Linear descent is also very convincing and comes close to the experience that lubricated switches can offer.

In-game, especially on FPS, the Scope RX proves to be an ally of choice and it allows you to quickly chain actions with excellent responsiveness. It will therefore be an ideal companion for all FPS enthusiasts and it is quite simply the best keyboard with linear switches that we have been able to test so far for this use.

The editorial team is not left out since, unlike a K100 RGB which is almost too reactive, we end up with a very fluid and particularly pleasant experience during long sessions. Due to the more assertive resistance of the switches, involuntary activations are much rarer and it is a real pleasure to use.

In short, Asus has achieved a tour de force with new switches that really stand out from the competition and offer a balance between responsiveness and resistance. These new RX switches are quite simply the nicest linear models we’ve been given to test so far.

Conclusion

Concluding the review of the Asus Rog Strix Scope RX gaming keyboard is quite simply one of the best linear switch keyboards on the market. If it does not shine by its design and its functionalities, it goes to the essentials by focusing on performance.

The performance is just admirable with particularly convincing RX switches that bring something really new to the mainstream gaming keyboard market. They make this new model an ally of choice for FPS players and other demanding titles.

Better yet, Asus is not going overboard and is offering its new keyboard at a relatively reasonable price of around € 130. If you are looking for a new typing experience, with a keyboard that remains practical, the Scope RX is for you.
