DC FanDome 2020 announces two new Batman games
During Saturday’s DC FanDome 2020, two new games from the creators of the Batman: Arkham series have been announced. However, both of them are getting ready for somewhat controversial productions. Trailers for both productions, and even gameplay of one of them, have already appeared on the web.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Gotham Knights are productions that look as good as they are controversial. Some of the dev ideas might not appeal to Batman: Arkham fans.
DC FanDome 2020 and two new Batman games
Last Saturday brought us fresh information straight from the virtual DC FanDome 2020 event. During the event, we were presented with new trailers and videos from highly anticipated cinema productions such as Wonder Woman 1984, Suicide Squad or The Batman. We also learned about the next games prepared by the two studios that previously created the Batman: Arkham series (the so-called “Arkhamverse”). The creators of the series, i.e. Rocksteady studio, presented a trailer from Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, while Warner Bros Games Montreal (responsible for the Batman: Arkham Origins part) showed materials from Gotham Knights. Especially the latter can divide fans.
Gotham Knights – trailer and gameplay
Earlier rumors turned out to be true – in the new game from the creators of Batman: Arkham Origins, we will fight a secret organization called the Court of Owls, which secretly rules Gotham, and even the police will probably stand in our way. The surprise, however, is the fact that the creators decided on an extremely controversial solution – we will not play Batman here, because he (as the trailer shows) is dead.
Instead, we will play the role of the Dark Knight’s helpers, i.e. Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing, and Red Hood, and we will try to free Gotham with a maximum of two players. The first gameplay was even shown, which shows that the game does not differ that much from the mechanics known from Arkhamverse. Here, too, we will have an open world at our disposal, a number of gadgets, and it looks like even vehicles.
A new game from Rocksteady
British studio Rocksteady, the original creators of the entire, award-winning Batman: Arkham series, had previously announced that we can count on specific information about the recently announced production of Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. Here we will play as members of the Suicide Legion, sent to Metropolis (which will be fully open) to kill or capture the Justice League led by the evil Superman. For now, we know that we will play at least four characters, i.e. Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang and King Shark.
The atmosphere of the trailer presented is quite loose, even though the production belongs to Arkhamverse. However, the developers’ decisions may be somewhat surprising – the game will be a game-service that we can play alone (with bots) or with up to three friends. There will be an opportunity to develop and improve equipment and characters, and the creators focus on cooperation.
The production itself is supposed to combine an action role-playing game with a “new approach” to this genre. The whole thing can, therefore, resemble Destiny 2 and the upcoming Marvel’s Avengers.
Gotham Knights are expected to appear on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, and PC next year, and we will be waiting for Suicide Squad until 2022. Rocksteady’s production will only be available on new-generation consoles and PC.
