Google Nest launches a thermostat with a new design, touchscreen interface, and motion detection
Google’s Nest unit today launched its brand new thermostat. The Google Nest Thermostat is the company’s most affordable yet, but it’s also the first to feature a new drag-and-drop interface on the side, along with Soli radar technology. Google to detect room occupancy and when you are near the device.
The Nest Thermostat Radar is used to detect if you have someone at home; otherwise, it automatically lowers the temperature to save power. Ruchi Desai, product manager at Nest, tells TechCrunch that the product does not use Soli technology for gesture detection because it did not match the user’s profile.
Rumors have suggested that Google will launch a thermostat with Soli radar technology, used in the Pixel 4 to recognize gesture commands. The company officially announced the Nest Thermostat on Monday, October 12, but the radar is only for motion detection. It has touch controls to adjust the temperature in the house, as well as integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.
Google Nest thermostat changes controls
There’s a big change to the thermostat: its predecessors of the past nine years had a rotary control on the edges to adjust the temperature and navigate the interface. In the newly presented model, it has been replaced with touch-sensitive edges.
You can use voice commands to raise or lower the temperature, either through Alexa or Google Assistant. And for remote control, there is the Google Home app for Android and iOS. With Quick Schedule, the user can configure the thermostat to adjust the temperature on specific days and times. Savings Finder in turn offers small tweaks to save power.
Google bought Nest in 2014 and started using its brand more widely in 2019 on products like the Nest Hub Max, Nest Mini, Nest Wifi, and the new Nest Audio speaker.
