Why do Zombies Fascinate us so Much?

But why are we so drawn to them? What makes zombies keep us coming back for more? Some say it’s because zombies represent our fear of death. Others think it’s because they are a metaphor for the human condition or our fears of being controlled by outside forces.

Whatever the reason, there’s no denying that zombies are here to stay. So if you’re a fan of brain-eaters, smashed skulls, slow zombies, fast zombies, and of course all the pitched battles that go with it, then this top is for you.

Top 10 Zombie Movies

1) Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Directed by George A. Romero, Night of the Living Dead is widely considered one of the most influential horror films ever made. It tells the story of a group of people trapped on a farm and besieged by zombies. The film was groundbreaking for its time and features some truly gruesome scenes.

2) Dawn of the Dead (1978)

Romero’s sequel to Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead is set in a mall and follows a group of survivors trying to escape hordes of zombies. The film is faster than its predecessor and features some truly iconic scenes, like the infamous “climbing” scene.

3) Day of the Dead (1985)

The third and final installment in Romero’s Living Dead series, Day of the Dead is set in an underground bunker and follows a group of scientists as they attempt to find a cure for the zombie virus. The movie is darker and gorier than its predecessors, but it has some really great scenes and is well worth watching.

4) Shaun of the Dead (2004)

A comic take on the zombie genre, Shaun of the Dead follows the adventures of Shaun (Simon Pegg), a slacker who must save his friends and family from a zombie apocalypse. The film is jam-packed with pop culture references and is a must-watch for any fan of the genre.

5) 28 Days Later (2002)

Directed by Danny Boyle, 28 Days Later is a thriller about a group of survivors in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse. The film moves at a fast pace and has some really intense scenes.

It’s also worth watching for its depiction of London in the aftermath of the apocalypse. To prolong the pleasure, don’t hesitate to watch its sequel, 28 weeks later. Maybe a little worse, but particularly bloody too!

6) Zombie Land (2009)

Zombieland follows the adventures of four survivors of an apocalypse (Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin) who cross America in search of a safe haven. The film is full of action and humor and brings a fresh take on zombie movies.

7) World War Z (2013)

World War Z is a true zombie pandemic blockbuster, directed by Marc Forster and starring Brad Pitt in the title role.

With some of the most intense zombie action scenes ever filmed, World War Z is a must-have for any fan of the genre and sets the bar for very high special effects. And too bad for the credibility of the plot at times!

8) I Am Legend (2007)

I am legend is a sci-fi thriller starring Will Smith in the lead role. The film is set in New York after a zombie apocalypse and follows the story of a man who may be the last living human.

The film is intense and action-packed, and worth watching for its unique approach to the genre. The landscapes of a Manhattan emptied of its population are particularly impressive. In 2022, Will Smith announced that a sequel might see the light of day… but that was before the slap case.

9) Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Directed by Zack Snyder, Dawn of the Dead is a remake of the classic Romero film (number 2 in this top 10 if you read that correctly).

The film is set in a shopping mall and follows a group of survivors trying to escape hordes of zombies. With its very intense action scenes, Dawn of the Dead is a key film for all lovers of the genre.

10) Train to Busan (2016)

Last Train to Busan is a Korean action thriller about a group of passengers who must fight for their lives when a zombie outbreak occurs on a train. The film is fast-paced and full of intense action and is a staple of Asian cinema for any fan of the genre.

Of course, this list is not exhaustive. In addition to films released at the cinema, we could also have mentioned The Walking Dead, the emblematic series, but it is out of the competition!
